Expungement (also called "expunction") is a court-ordered process in which the legal record of an arrest or a criminal conviction is dismissed or sealed. When a conviction is expunged, you are "setting aside a criminal conviction." and in California the process results in a "dismissal" of your conviction under Penal Code §1203.4 and you can represent that you never have been convicted in most instances, including a job application.
